“Writers vs. AI” was a huge topic in 2023, and it’s going to stay front of mind well into 2024 and beyond.
Though we use this section of the newsletter to offer little tips and insights on staying competitive in today’s marketing landscape, we simply do not have the column inches to dedicate to your questions about AI.
We need to do something bigger.
Over the holidays, I pitched “something bigger” to Dave: A freelance writer’s guide to surviving the AI apocalypse.
The idea would be this:
Do a comprehensive “state of the industry” report on how exactly AI is being used in marketing. One part educational, one part threat assessment.
Analyze where the opportunities for writers are: What can you do that AI can’t do, what new niches can you exploit, and how do you market yourself in this new landscape?
Provide breakdowns of the popular tools so you can understand exactly what they can and can’t do, and decide for yourself whether or not you have any use for them.
But, we need your help!
To make this asset the biggest, baddest, and most helpful thing we can muster, we want to make sure it covers everything you want to know.
So, please answer the following polls. Feel free to open this email in your browser and share it with your networks so we can get more responses.
And if we missed anything you think we should cover, reply to this email and tell us.
First, we want to make sure we’re providing resources in the right medium. Please answer the following:
Second, we want to make sure we cover all the topics you care about. Please answer the following (or reply to this email if we missed something):
Again! If you can share this newsletter widely to help us get more responses, that would help a bunch. It will only mean a better, more useful tool for you in the end.
We’ll keep you updated on our progress with this over the coming months!
If you have any questions, please reply to this email and ask! We read every reply, and if we see an interesting question, we’ll answer it in a future newsletter.

Eye on AI 🤖

In this section, we bring you the top stories about AI that affect the creator economy (so you can stay a step ahead of the machine overlords).
Today’s robopocalypse headlines 🤖💀
This big news last week was the bloodbath over at Google. The search giant has cut 12,000 bodies in the last year, and added another 1,000 to the unemployment line last week. Their replacements? AI.
For us, last week’s big Google surprise is that they apparently do not consider author byline as a ranking factor. What? Since when?
Hotjar did a good old-fashioned John Henry experiment, pitting a human copywriter against ChatGPT to see which one delivers better results. Who won?
LinkedIn’s Tech Stack pulled together a helpful glossary of AI buzzwords to help you get in on the conversation.
100 content people you should be following 🤝

We made a big list of the most influential voices in the creator economy. Every week, we showcase a new thought leader you should be following.
#86 Megan Morreale
Megan is the Head of Content Marketing at a little site you may have heard of called Reddit.
Why you should follow her
She’s the perfect “other side of the tracks” follow. She talks to other content marketers (people who hire you) about how to get the best results from the creator economy (people like you).
Posts like this are invaluable intel for getting into the minds of your future bosses.
Anyone confused about what to charge clients? Look at this post. Megan’s timeline is packed with gems like this.
Though Megan’s audience is primarily other marketers like herself, her insights on where content is going will help you keep your finger on the pulse of the market.
